The Block Builders – 2022 Tree Change

M.M Constructions were thrilled to be The Block Builders for Tom and Sarah-Jane on the 2022 Tree Change season. What an amazing experience. We know fans of the show have lots of questions, so we thought we’d answer a few here and show off some photos of the beautiful finished home.

How did M.M Constructions end up as The Block builder?

Tom searched Instagram for local builders in the Macedon Ranges, and we came up in his search. He then came up and had a meeting with us. And we had really good vibes. I think Mick (founder of M.M Constructions) and Tom immediately hit it off and got along really well. I think Tom knew he could work with us.

Did you work on other projects at the same time as The Block?

Yes, we had to keep our business running. But Tom understood that, and he had trade experience as well. So when we weren’t there, he could manage things. Having said that, Mick was there most days with Tom. Tom and Sarah Jane were also away on occasion, having meetings, attending to media commitments and participating in challenge days. So when they were away from site, Mick was running their work site.

How much notice did you get before starting?

We didn’t really get much notice. I think it was a week or a week and a half’s notice. We had a rough start date. And then we got told to turn up.

Was there a process you had to go through?

We all had to be inducted and sign contracts.

How was the experience of working on a building site that also had TV cameras?

There were lots of people coming and going, and lots of trades to manage, so it was very hectic. Plus lots of interviews, lots of cameras. Lots of trying to work around that, which was a new experience for us. We experienced tight deadlines, late nights, wind, mud, rain, freezing cold, all the things you see on TV.

Did you have any hesitation taking on the job?

We actually live around the corner from The Block site, so we’re only a 5-minute drive. That was a big driving factor in Mick saying yes to The Block because he knew taking it on would be a massive commitment while still running our own business.

What were Tom and Sarah-Jane like to work with?

Tom and Sarah Jane are absolutely lovely people. Really, really nice and really easy to work for. Just collectively as a team, they also had great electricians, great trades, and they all just worked together really, really well. It has really been an awesome experience.
