A Custom Home That Started With a Puzzle
A Custom Home That Started With a Puzzle
When most people picture a new home build, they picture concrete slabs, timber frames, and bricks going up one after another in a straight, predictable line. But on this custom new home build in Strathmore, the brickwork wasn't that simple — and that was exactly the point.
The home was finished in McLaren Little Vale Hampton bricks, a blend made up of 9 different individual brick colours. Instead of one uniform tone, the finished wall needed to weave all nine colours together into a single, cohesive pattern — one that had to be planned before a single brick went up.
Why 9 Brick Colours Changes Everything
A single-colour brick is forgiving. Lay it in any order and the wall looks the same. A 9-colour blend is a different challenge entirely — get the distribution wrong and you end up with obvious clumping, awkward colour bands, or a pattern that looks accidental rather than intentional.
That's why, before construction began, our team separated every single brick by colour and laid them out flat. This flat lay gave us — and our clients — a full preview of how the blend would look across the wall, long before it was permanent.
Choosing the Layout Is Choosing Your Home
This is also where the build became genuinely custom. Sitting down with the client to choose the exact pattern and colour distribution meant the finished brickwork wasn't just "a brick colour" — it was a decision unique to their home. No two brick blends ever come out the same way twice, which means the finished result reflects choices made specifically for that build, at that address, for that family.
Once the Layout Was Locked In
With the pattern signed off, the project moved into full construction — bricks and mortar coming together exactly to plan, with the pre-approved layout guiding every course.
Why We Don't Rush This Part
It would have been faster to skip the flat lay and simply start laying bricks colour-by-colour as they came off the pallet. But the pattern, the blend, and the overall street presence of the finished home all depend on getting this stage right.
That's the difference between a good build and a great one. It's the small decisions most people are never aware of — but they're the reason the finished product comes together so well.

Building New Homes Across Strathmore and Melbourne's North-West
This project is a good example of the kind of custom new home construction we take on across Strathmore, Essendon, Ascot Vale, Aberfeldie, Gisborne South, and the wider Macedon Ranges region. Whether it's a knockdown rebuild or a custom new build from the ground up, we take the time to get the details right — because those details are what make a house feel like your home.
