If you own land in Sunbury, particularly around The Grange, there's a good chance it isn't flat. The Challenge: A Steep Site With Rear Hill Views
The Chipperfield Ave block dropped away significantly toward the rear boundary, which meant a straightforward single-storey design simply wasn't going to make the most of the land — or the views. Instead of fighting the slope, we designed a home that works with it: an effective three-storey build, dug deep into the block with extensive excavation and core-filled block retaining walls to create a solid, engineered platform for the home to sit on.
Rather than treating the drop as a limitation, we used it to our advantage. The rear of the home now takes in sweeping views across the rolling hills that surround this pocket of Sunbury, with the lower and middle levels designed specifically to capture that outlook.
Modern Contemporary Design, Built to Suit the Block
The finished home has a striking, modern contemporary street presence. The facade combines:
Colorbond nail-strip monument cladding for a sharp, linear, contemporary edge
Littlehampton Blush bricks, warming up the monument tones with texture and colour
A Tower door flush panel garage door in monument battens, designed to blend seamlessly into the cladding line rather than stand out as a separate element
A dark aggregate driveway that grounds the whole facade
A steel swing door leading into an entry vestibule, arriving at a black-framed, double-glazed glass front door
Every material and finish was chosen to work together as one cohesive, seamless facade — not a collection of separate features. That's a big part of what makes sloping block designs succeed or fail: cohesion across multiple levels and street-facing planes.
