Inner City Extensions Done Right: Our Blyth Street, Brunswick Extension

If you're searching for an inner city builder in Brunswick or the surrounding Melbourne suburbs, our recently completed project on Blyth Street is a great example of what's possible when heritage character meets modern design — without compromising on either.
The Brief: A Run-Down Period Home With Serious Potential
Like so many inner-city buyers, our clients on Blyth Street had purchased a period home for one reason above all else: location. The house itself was run-down and dated, but its position in the heart of Brunswick made it too good to pass up. Our clients came to us with a clear vision — retain the street-facing period charm, but completely transform the rest of the home into a light-filled, functional modern residence.
This is a scenario we see time and again with inner-city clients: the home isn't the drawcard, the suburb is. The challenge for us as builders is delivering a renovation that respects the existing streetscape while giving the family a home that actually works for modern life.
The Build: Period Facade, Modern Extension
From the street, the original period home remains beautifully intact — preserving the character that makes Brunswick's inner-north streets so sought after. But step around the back, and the transformation is complete.
We added a single storey extension to the rear of the existing residence, finished with polished concrete flooring and a clean, contemporary aesthetic. The exterior was clad in black charred eco timber, giving the new addition a striking, textural contrast to the original brick — a finish that's become increasingly popular for inner-city renovations looking to make a modern statement without overpowering a heritage streetscape.
The Complex Part: Building Around a Heritage-Listed Laneway Wall
What made this project genuinely challenging — and rewarding — was the construction of a double storey garage and loft at the rear of the property. The site included an existing heritage-listed brick wall along the laneway boundary, which could not be removed or altered under any circumstances.
Building a new two-storey structure hard up against a protected heritage wall required extensive structural shoring to temporarily support and protect the wall throughout construction. Every stage of the garage and loft build had to be carefully sequenced and engineered around this constraint, with structural integrity and heritage compliance front of mind from start to finish.
This is the kind of detailed, high-stakes construction work that separates an experienced inner-city builder from the rest. Heritage overlays, laneway boundaries, tight sites and structural shoring aren't rare in Melbourne's inner suburbs — they're often the norm, and they require a builder who knows how to problem-solve without cutting corners.
The Result: A Complete Transformation
The finished home on Blyth Street is a genuine transformation — a period facade that keeps faith with the streetscape, paired with a modern, functional extension and a striking new garage and loft that make the most of every inch of the block. It's a home that works for how our clients actually live, while honouring the character that drew them to the location in the first place.

Thinking About Renovating a Period Home in Melbourne's Inner North?
If you've bought — or you're considering buying — a run-down period home in Brunswick, Coburg, Northcote, Fitzroy or anywhere across Melbourne's inner city, you're not alone. More and more buyers are prioritising location first and renovation potential second, and that's exactly where we come in.
At M.M Constructions, we specialise in navigating the complexities that come with inner-city renovations and extensions — heritage overlays, tight sites, laneway boundaries and everything in between — and turning run-down period homes into spaces that work for modern family life.
